Biggar Ramblers

Dryburgh Abbey Riverside Walk

On Wednesday 8th January six members of Biggar Ramblers drove to the Borders’ town of St Boswells for a 5 mile circular walk, starting at Dryburgh Abbey, the resting place of Sir Walter Scott. On a crisp, sunny day with a solid frost underfoot the walk passed a small temple in the trees before crossing the Tweed by a suspension foot bridge, from which a ‘Pooh Sticks’ race was initiated. The route then followed St Cuthbert’s way alongside the riverbank before rising up into the village of St Boswell’s. Turning off the main street they gained their first real views of the snow-capped Eildon Hills. Passing the golf clubhouse the footpath skirts the course which hugs the riverbank. No golfers were out but the group found an ideal spot for a coffee stop
overlooking the frozen greens and a full and rushing River Tweed. After crossing the river by the road bridge more great views were revealed across the Tweed valley towards the Eildons along the Borders’ Way back to the car park. A short drive up to Scott’s view allowed the group to enjoy their picnic with Buzzards circling above and a sunlit panoramic view across the Borders’ region.
